Hi Neighbor,

Clean waterways are as important as safe neighborhoods. The quality of water in our streams affects the quality of life for all living things. But growth, development, and carelessness threaten the health of our streams and rivers. Pushed to their limits by the increasing demands of our society, our streams and rivers now show signs of stress.

Some of those distressed and impaired streams may run through your neighborhood. Local folks are in the best position to keep an eye on the nearby waterway and Project Stream Watch Can help.

With Stream Watch, citizens, groups, or organizations "adopt" a waterway, or a portion of one, and act on its behalf. Stream Watchers become the adoptive parents of a stream and, as such, become its primary caretakers.

All you have to do is fill out the registration form/questionnaire and return it to Stormwater SMART Stream Watch.

The information you provide will be used to send you appropriate materials, information, and guide for the Stream Watch. All sizes of streams, rivers, and lakes are eligible for adoption. If you're not sure which one to pick, we can make some suggestions.

As a Stream Watch member, you will be asked to conduct two visual monitoring and litter cleanup sessions per year. We encourage you to become the local experts on the adopted streams' dimensions, history and wildlife, and act on behalf of the streams' best interests. Once you learn to understand what it is your stream is trying to tell you, you will be able to translate its concerns to others.

Thank you for your help and concern!

Stormwater SMART is working together with North Carolina Stream Watch to help keep our waterways clean.

Over 200 existing Stream Watch groups, ranging from one or two members to several hundred, have adopted a waterway and act on its behalf.

How about your neighborhood, organization, or group?
