Middle School Stormwater SMART Challenge! Students: Think of yourself as a professional and researcher assigned the task of identifying the stormwater problems on your school grounds and finding reasonable solutions that will control runoff and improve the water quality. Remember: this stormwater runoff project is not only a chance to reinforce the skills you learn in the classroom, but it is also an opportunity to educate other students and people in the community on issues related to water quality. Here is your challenge: Use school grounds and buildings as learning areas. Take a tour of the school grounds. Complete the School Stormwater Pollution Checklist and conduct a stormwater audit. Evaluate site conditions: Check out the characteristics of the run-on that enters the problem area, as well as the runoff that flows off the site. Gather basic information about the stormwater runoff problem. Conduct a Community Pollution Survey. What are the stormwater runoff or run-on problems around your school? What can be done about the stormwater runoff problem? Review both structural and non structural methods and determine which would be most effective for controlling runoff and improving water quality. Identify, recommend, and design long-term strategies that will effectively reduce stormwater runoff quantity and improve runoff water quality.
Efforts should include investigating and finding ways to maintain and improve the School and local environment.
